I flung my finger towards the open doorway. “Follow that – whatever the fuck it was!”

Gil snarled as he raced out into the parking lot, but stopped short, the soles of his boots scraping on the asphalt. “It’s already gone.”

“How is that possible?” Jackie shouted, glaring at each of us. “How did it move so fast? Did no one catch what it looked like?”

I glared back at her. “Did you, Miss Heightened Senses?”

Jackie crossed her arms. “Touché. You’re still an ass, though.”

“Fuck my life,” I said, kneading my forehead as I headed for the open door. “Are you telling me the killer isn’t even human? What kind of sick fuck signs up to join the Perpetual Sun to slaughter their own?”

“I’m okay,” Roth said, picking himself up off the floor. He shook his hand, flicking away the last of the electricity lingering there and snuffing out his homemade bulb. “No need to worry, really, I’m fine.”

“Did you see it?” Jackie asked, grabbing him by the collar. “The thing that jumped out of there? Was it even human?”

“You guys see better than I can,” Roth said, prying her fingers loose. “So, no. But I’m fine, I’m not injured or anything, thanks for asking.”

I grabbed him by the wrist, tugging him out of the store. “You’ll be fine, stop being a big baby.”

To my surprise, instead of arguing back, Roth just followed, smiling to himself, loving the attention. Big, dumb baby. We joined the others in the parking lot, the night feeling so much colder.

“The thing to do would be to chase it,” Gil said, sniffing at the air. “But I can’t get a proper whiff of anything. Jackie?”

She shook her head. “I did smell the coffin, though, and I regret it. Cheap cologne. Men’s, the really, really cheap drugstore kind. They bathed in it.”

Roth rubbed his beard, like he was playing detective. “So it’s something that isn’t human, but also has questionable taste in body spray?”

“Brilliant deduction,” I said.

Gil coughed into his fist. “Technically, that description applies to you as well, Sterling.”

I could feel myself going red. “Can we not, okay? I wear designer cologne. The good stuff.”

“Designed to smell cheap,” Jackie said, snickering.

“We need to find the thing that just bolted out of here,” I said, louder, so everyone could hear, and mostly stop talking about my grooming choices.

“Fine, geez, I’ll just lock up.” Jackie did as she promised, because we were supposed to take only pictures, which we didn’t, and leave nothing but footprints, which we also didn’t.

“Hang on,” Gil said, frowning as he knelt on the ground. “What the hell is this?”

I went over to him, also finding myself frowning at the shape in the dirt. “Oh, hell no.”

Roth’s hand crackled with electricity as he helpfully illuminated it. “Hey, that looks like a tiny little footprint. Almost like a kid’s footprint, actually. What? Why is everybody staring at me like that?”

Jackie stuffed her lock picking kit in the waistband of her jeans, then groaned. “You’ve got to be kidding me.
